Managing Stress & Finding Balance at Work

October 11, 2024

The world can be a stressful place. Between changes in workplace structure, heated election circuits, and economic problems – 2024 has been a year full of uncertainty and doubt. Work is a top contributor to the stress of everyday Americans – in fact a 2024 Mental Health study conducted by Headspace found that nearly half of employees surveyed say work is the leading cause of stress in their lives. As the HR Director at Rinck, I spend a lot of my time learning about and working with employees on mitigating stress and burnout. This World Mental Health Day, I wanted to share some of my favorite tips for managing stress and creating a more sustainable and fulfilling work routine:

  1. Set Boundaries: Clearly define your work hours AND stick to them. Avoid checking emails AND slack or doing work-related tasks outside of your scheduled time. Turn off your work notifications (if you can!) Communicate your boundaries to your colleagues and supervisors to ensure they respect your time.
  1. Take Regular Breaks: Schedule short breaks throughout your workday to step away from your desk, stretch, and refresh your mind. Go outside if you can.  Studies have shown that regular breaks improve focus, productivity, and overall well-being by preventing mental fatigue.
  1. Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness practices such as deep breathing, meditation, or simply focusing on the present moment during your workday. Even a few minutes of mindfulness can make a significant difference. Try the “5 things” exercise at your desk – 5 things you can: see, smell, touch, and hear
  1. Seek Support When Needed: Don’t hesitate to reach out to a trusted colleague, supervisor, or HR for support if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Many workplaces offer employee assistance programs (EAPs) that provide counseling services and resources (a lot of times the cost or some of the cost is covered by the EAP! And doesn’t come out of your pocket).
  1. Prioritize Self-Care Outside of Work: Engage in activities that you enjoy and that help you relax, whether it’s exercise, reading, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing hobbies. Make sure to disconnect from work during your personal time.

If left unchecked, chronic stress can evolve into burnout, a state that is far more challenging to overcome. By prioritizing mental well-being, organizations not only support their employees’ health but also enhance productivity, creativity, and overall performance. So, today, I urge everyone to take a moment for self-care—whether it’s by trying one of the tips shared here or embracing practices that already work for you. A small investment in your mental health today can have lasting positive effects on both your personal well-being and the collective success of your workplace.
