To all the desktop loving folks out there, we’ve got some good news for you! Today, Instagram added some amazing new search features to their desktop site making it super easy to search for hashtags and places. Although Instagram was originally developed as a mobile app, in recent months they have taken a lot of steps to improve the usability of their desktop site.

Have you ever stumbled upon a Buzzfeed article and realized it is just a series of Instagram photos from various users? This is what we call embedded content and it is an incredible traffic driver for sites/apps like Instagram. As it becomes more and more popular to source content like this, it is imperative for sites like Instagram to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.

Because we use a lot of search tools for our clients, we decided to take a look at these new features. Users will now be able to search by hashtags and places. Once you put in your search, the site populates all photos with the tag. Photos are bright and beautiful and stand out on the page. The scrolling feature is amazing. You can and will get lost on this site for hours. When you search for a hashtag, photos are sorted by “Top Posts” and “Recent Posts” giving you a clear picture of the posts out there.

As users we love this new feature, but as marketers we are obsessed with this new feature. What does this mean for us? Well, it is now much easier to search and track specific hashtags for our clients. It is also much easier to search and engage with users. Finally, it will be much easier to embed content (much like Buzzfeed) for our native advertising or content marketing pieces. It’s as if the Instagram geniuses knew exactly what we needed and delivered! Now, we just need Instagram to launch a tool that allows us to post photos directly from our computers… but we won’t hold our breath.
